Frequently Asked Questions

Below are the most frequently asked questions by Artemis Care clients. We sincerely hope that you find these helpful. If you would like to have a chat to discuss further please don’t hesitate to give us a call, we would love to hear from you.

What is live-in care?

Live-in care is a wonderful alternative to going into a care/nursing home for elderly, vulnerable or frail adults who need assistance and support in order to remain living in their own homes as independently and safely as possible.

A carer lives with you in your own home, for a mutually agreed period of time, depending on your personal preferences and requirements. We aim to provide a high level of service to you and we find this usually means a rota of 2 or 3 carers working exclusively with an individual client on a rotation basis.

What do live-in carers do?

A live-in carer can help with various housekeeping tasks such as light cleaning, preparation of nutritious home cooked meals, laundry duties and ordering groceries in addition to helping with personal care such as assistance with bathing, helping with the administration of medication, encouraging independence, providing companionship and emotional support and driving the client to appointments and social engagements.

Within reason a live-in carer will do whatever necessariy, dependant upon your needs and wishes, in order for you to stay living comfortably in your own home.

What do I need to provide for a live-in carer?

Bedroom: A live-in carer will need their own bedroom and some storage space provided for their clothing and personal items.

Bathroom: Live-in carers need to have access to a bathroom. It is not necessary, although preferable, for the carer to have private use of a bathroom. If a carer is sharing a bathroom with a client the bathroom should be clean and functional.

Food: Live-in carers need to be provided with food or alternatively an allowance is to be provided in order for the carer to buy their own food. Usually the carer will cook for the client and join them at meal times unless the client prefers to eat alone. In certain circumstances carers will cater for themselves separately. Clients are to ensure that their household budget is sufficient to provide healthy nutritious meals for both themselves and the carer.

Breaks: Although a carer lives with you 24/7, consideration must be given to the length of the working day. Live-in carers are entitled to a minimum of a 2 hour break each day. If a client is not safe to be left alone during this time, alternative arrangements must be put in place to ensure safe working practice.

Wi-fi: Having access to wi-fi is very important for live-in carers. Both in order for them to carry out tasks on behalf of the client and keep in touch with family and friends.

Wi-fi is also a wonderful way for clients to keep in touch with relatives and friends through various apps and video calls. It is a wonderful way to bring the outside world in whether it be television on demand, interesting programs or podcasts. A carer can help or assist a client to navigate the internet and use various apps, access favourite music and so on.

Will a live-in carer help to look after my pets?

Absolutely! Our carers recognise the many benefits that living with pets can bring to our clients.Having a much loved pet can be a huge source of comfort and joy and have a very beneficial effect on a client’s health and wellbeing.

We understand that there may come a point when a client may need help to take care of a much loved pet. Our carers will happily walk a dog, ensure that your pets are fed, well looked after and taken to the vet as required. Our aim is to ensure that our clients can continue to live happily with their beloved pets.

How long will a carer stay with me?

We pride ourselves on our ability to be flexible. Unlike some care providers we don’t have set start and finish days nor mandatory minimum or maximum lengths of stay. The duration of a carer’s stay will be dependant upon the preferences of both client and carer.

We understand that clients prefer stability and minimal changes and we strive to achieve the best client/carer match. Some carers like to work for several weeks or months before taking a well earned break whereas other carers prefer to work on a 2 week on 2 week off rotation. When this is the case, we ensure that another well matched carer works in rotation with them in order to facilitate smooth handovers. After a break the carer will usually return to the same client, ensuring continuity of care and familiarity for the client.

In the case of respite or short term cover we can tailor the duration of a carer’s stay to a client’s specific requirements.

Will a carer help me during the night?

When you engage an Artemis live-in carer they are with you 24 hours a day. This means that should you require help during the night they will be on hand to assist you.

If you have complex needs requiring more support during the night then we can provide a dedicated night carer who will be awake and able to attend to your needs throughout the night. Our overnight care service can be provided in addition to live-in care if required or as a separate service if your daytime care needs are already being taken care of.

What if I don't get along with my carer?

Our aim is to match you with a carer that you will get along with, and who will return to you on a regular basis for as long as you need assistance to enable you to stay at home being well looked after.

Sometimes, for a variety of reasons, you may find that you just don’t get along as well with a particular carer and you would prefer to have them replaced.

We usually find that with a little give and take most minor issues can be resolved to everyone’s satisfaction but if this is not the case then we will do our utmost to find a more suitable replacement carer for you.

Your happiness, peace of mind and comfort are our number one priority at all times and rest assured that we will do everything we can to make your experience of live-in care a positive one.

How much will live-in care cost?

The cost of live-in care varies considerably depending upon a number of factors, such as the nature of the role, whether it is purely companionship or if the client has complex care needs.

The cost of live-in care for couples compares very favourably with those of a residential home. Couples receiving live-in care at home pay far less than a couple would pay for two individual bedrooms within a residential home. In fact for a couple being cared for together at home the fee is only nominally more expensive than that of a single live-in care client and it is often possible,  depending upon individual care needs, for a single carer to look after them both. There are many advantages for a couple being cared for within the familiarity of their own home and community with the peace of mind, comfort, privacy, security and choice that live-in care affords.

The cost of care can be reduced when family are able to assist as care givers and a live-in carer is then engaged on a part time basis. Families are sometimes able to provide daytime or weekend cover or maybe families can cope with care needs during the daytime but need a carer for night time duties.

We pride ourselves on being extremely flexible and understand that each individual situation and the preferences of each client can vary significantly. We are very happy to discuss your individual requirements, the various options available to you along with the costs involved. This is entirely free of charge with no obligation on your part to engage us thereafter in the provision of live-in care solutions.

Who pays the live-in carer?
Carers introduced to you by Artemis Care work on a self-employed basis. The carer will invoice you at agreed intervals, either weekly or fortnightly, and you will pay them directly their pre agreed fee plus any out-of-pocket expenses that they have incurred.

The carers are all registered as self-employed with HMRC and are therefore responsible for payment of their own tax and national insurance contributions.
I have decided to have live-in care. How long will it be before care starts?

Once you have made the decision to have live-in care we will arrange a mutually convenient time to conduct the registration process with you. Part of this process is a comprehensive telephone interview in order for us to build up a very detailed client profile encompassing your personal details, individual circumstances and care needs.

We then proceed with finding the most suitable carers for you. You will then be offered the opportunity to interview prospective carers yourself and decide which carer you feel is right for you or alternatively you can leave the final decision to us as some of our clients prefer to do.

Once a final decision has been made between client and carer a definite date will be set for care to start. This whole process can take anything from 24 hours to several working days dependent both upon your personal circumstances and the availability of the chosen carer.
