BENEFITS OF CARE AT HOME
REMAIN IN YOUR OWN HOME
Your beloved home is as unique as you are, that’s what makes it the most comfortable, secure, familiar place for you to live contentedly for as long as possible.
Live-in care is the best solution for those wishing to stay in their own homes rather than move into a residential or nursing home.
It is well known that moving is one of the top 3 most stressful events a person can experience. Elderly people may have already suffered multiple losses such as the death of a lifelong spouse/partner, friends passing away, loss of or reduced mobility or cognitive function. The upheaval of leaving their beloved home and community links in order to move into a residential or nursing home can cause profound distress and fear. It could mean having to leave behind a spouse or loved one, lifelong neighbours and friends, perhaps rehome a beloved pet or a change of GP.
OUR LIVE-IN CARERS
Every live-in carer is as unique as our clients, they come from all walks of life and backgrounds. They have been carefully selected for their empathy, compassion, professionalism and share our belief in the benefits of care for clients on a one-one basis within a home setting. Our carers are enthusiastic, professional individuals committed to meeting your needs and enhancing your quality of life. They provide peace of mind, promote independence and wellbeing whilst offering reassurance and gentle support all in the familiar surroundings of your own home.
“Live-in care is a long established but relatively unknown, growing alternative to residential and nursing care that substantially extends the care choice available to the individual. I expect live-in care to continue to grow in popularity and to become the high quality first care choice of many people.”
Dr. Glen Mason, Director of People, Communities and Local Government, Department of Health.
Live-in care at home provides the most stable, therapeutic and caring environment.
Your care and wellbeing is our number one priority. We believe that in order to deliver the very best care for you getting to know you and developing a relationship based on trust, honesty, compassion and attention to detail is essential.
Our carers aim to establish a warm personal relationship with their clients. Understanding and supporting your individual needs and preferences is one of the most important aspects of one to one care. Care Plans are highly personalised and fully flexible to allow for adaptations as care needs change. Typically two or three carers work with one client on a rotation basis. This enables them to provide a very high level of personalised one to one care. The duration of each rotation can vary from a few days to several weeks at a time, depending upon the client’s personal circumstances and preferences. The benefits of continuity of care promote well being and peace of mind for both our clients and their families/ loved ones.
EXERCISE
The benefits of exercise on emotional and physical well-being as well as quality of sleep are well known. Simply being out in the fresh air is good for our health and sense of well-being yet shockingly some residents of care homes seldom, if ever, get taken out for a walk and are not always able to sit in the garden on a lovely day to enjoy the sunshine and fresh air. Sadly these vulnerable people may have to remain indoors whatever the weather, mainly due to inadequate staffing levels and pressures on time of the overstretched care home staff.
A wonderful benefit for clients being cared for at home with a dedicated live-in carer is that they can still enjoy the pleasure of a walk or sit outside. If the weather is good there is nothing better than being outside on a lovely day to lift one’s mood. Sunshine gives a much needed boost of Vitamin D which is known to improve bone density, improve cognition and cardiovascular health and is so important for one’s general sense of well-being.
HAPPIER AT HOME
Carers can assist you to bake a cake or maybe organise morning coffee or afternoon tea so that you can invite friends, neighbours or loved ones to visit. Carers can drive you to your favourite salon so that you can get your hair done if you so wish or they can maybe drive you to visit family or friends. For those clients that are no longer mobile, carers can ensure that they are made as comfortable as possible and treated with kindness, patience, compassion, sensitivity and dignity at all times. In particular, carers pay special attention to hydration, nutrition, integrity of the skin (in order to avoid painful bed sores) and ensure that all personal care and grooming needs are carried out sensitively and diligently.
Carers will always do their best to ensure that bed-bound patients feel cared for. Having one-to-one care at home can help to minimise feelings of boredom, frustration and loneliness that can lead to depression adversely affecting those who find themselves confined to their beds.
Live-in care at home is a totally different rhythm, with none of the time constraints or high pressure environment of care within a care home setting, where one carer may be responsible for a number of clients. One of the loveliest aspects of live-in care is having time to chat with clients, to hear interesting stories of their lives, to reminisce and to maybe play their favourite music which can evoke so many lovely memories for them. Carers can bring hobbies or activities to the bedside where possible and if needed carers can read to clients, maybe a book or a newspaper.
Carers can also assist clients to both make and receive telephone or video calls with friends and loved ones, further helping to ease feelings of loneliness and isolation. Our carers are committed to doing everything possible in order to enhance the quality of life and preserve the individuality of clients in their care.
Highly personalised care, delivered with respect for the client, sensitively to their needs and with the kindness and empathy that they deserve can make a world of difference and ensure that our clients feel valued and can lead happier lives, being beautifully cared for where they are most comfortable – at home.
SAFER AT HOME
Many elderly people stranded in hospital need good social care in order to be able to be safely discharged. Sadly due to a lack of care home beds and a shortage of support for care at home, due to cuts in social care budgets, elderly people who desperately want nothing more than to return to their homes have to remain occupying a hospital bed for days or weeks longer than necessary, through no fault of their own.
Statistics show that people being cared for in care home settings are twice as likely to experience a fall compared to those being cared for within their own homes. A live-in carer can help to greatly reduce the risk of falls, therefore reducing the burden on the overstretched NHS, by reducing the need for ambulances to attend and hospital admissions.
The risk of infectious diseases generally and in particular urinary tract infections (the most common non-respiratory infection in care homes) is also reduced significantly with one-to-one live-in care at home.
Live-in care is also an efficient and effective solution to freeing up much needed NHS beds, otherwise occupied by elderly, frail and vulnerable patients who are deemed unsafe to be discharged yet not in need of continued hospitalisation. There are estimated to be 1 in 7 beds being occupied in some busy NHS trusts by delayed discharge patients (formerly known by the derogatory term of bed blockers) and of course who can forget the devastating and truly heartbreaking outcome of the decision, during the height of the pandemic, to release un-tested hospital patients into care homes in order to free up much needed NHS beds.
